Consciousness, in its most direct sense, is subjective experience: the felt quality of seeing a color, remembering a place, or being aware of yourself. Explaining the mechanisms that accompany those experiences and explaining why experience exists are related but distinct tasks.
The central question for this map is whether consciousness depends entirely on the brain. A useful inquiry keeps three things separate: what someone experiences, what can be independently measured, and what a theory says those observations mean. An unusual experience can be worth investigating without settling its explanation.

Where to look.
The brain and conscious experience
A 2025 adversarial collaboration tested predictions from integrated information and global neuronal workspace theories. Results challenged aspects of both. Comparing competing predictions is one route toward a better account of consciousness.
Awareness around cardiac arrest
Prospective studies pair survivor interviews with physiological monitoring and awareness tests. Distinguishing experiences during resuscitation from those during recovery is a central challenge.
Perception beyond ordinary channels
Psi research asks whether people can obtain information without known sensory access. Study design, preregistration, blinding, and independent replication are critical to evaluating these claims.
Keep the alternatives in view.
Physicalist approaches explain experience through physical processes. Dualist approaches distinguish mind and matter. Idealist approaches treat consciousness as fundamental, while panpsychist approaches attribute experiential properties more widely. These are broad philosophical families, not interchangeable experimental results. A theory becomes more informative when it makes a prediction that a rival theory does not.
